The 2024 Entrepreneurship Grand Finale took place last Friday, February 23rd. This was the closing ceremony for the Entrepreneurship course (UC), a commitment made by the Faculty of Science and Technology at NOVA University Lisbon as a pioneer in university entrepreneurship.
At this ceremony, the 12 finalist teams were announced, including the winners of the corporate awards offered by the sponsoring companies of the 2024 Entrepreneurship Program (Asseco, Deloitte, EY, Jerónimo Martins, Mota-Engil, NOS, and NTT Data); the awards for best promotional videos; and the awards for best pitch.
In this last category, the grand prize winners were, first place, the 'Malaria Sense' team, which developed a rapid diagnostic test for malaria, one of the world's oldest diseases; In second place was the 'OperateInSight' team, which presented a vision of what the future of surgery could look like: a surgical planning platform that allows for the creation of three-dimensional models tailored to each patient and simulated surgeries in virtual reality. In third place was the 'WasteWise Innovations' team, which designed a solution for the circular economy in the construction sector, transforming construction waste into recycled bricks, creating a sustainable cycle of activity.
Also present on stage at this ceremony was Prof. Telmo G. Santos, Chair of the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering (DEMI), a department that played a key role in the design and implementation of this UC, which was initially created and coordinated by Prof. Vírgilio Machado, later by Prof. Antônio Grilo, and currently by Prof. Aneesh Zutshi, with the valuable collaboration of Prof. Fernanda Llussá. In his speech, Prof. Telmo Santos reinforced the importance of the Entrepreneurship Program, which has become one of NOVA FCT's hallmarks, as a way to promote creativity, human connection, and dialogue within multidisciplinary teams, aiming to solve cross-cutting problems through viable solutions and business ideas that respect the laws of physics and engineering principles.
