On September 30th, another edition of the European Researchers' Night took place, an event coordinated by the National Museum of Natural History and Science and the University of Lisbon. It included not only online activities but also over 100 in-person activities spread across the National Museum of Natural History and Science, the Lisbon Botanical Garden, and the Príncipe Real Garden.
The theme for this edition was "Science for All, Sustainability, and Inclusion," and UNIDEMI participated with two activities:
The first, a game on Sustainable Logistics, developed by Professor Susana Duarte and Professor Helena Carvalho, aims to demonstrate the importance of logistics in managing the flow of materials, goods, and communication, contributing to the reduction of CO2 emissions. During this game, exhibition visitors had to make decisions regarding the logistics system, considering restrictions on CO2 emissions.
The second activity consisted of a demonstration of a new Digital Platform for Environmental and Economic Analysis of the Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM) process, developed by Professor Radu Godina and PhD student Samruddha Kokare. This platform offers a solution to simplify and automate these environmental and economic assessment processes.
In addition to Professor Susana Duarte, Professor Helena Carvalho and Professor Radu Godina, Professor Rogério Puga Leal, Professor Alexandra Tenera, Professor Bruno Soares, and PhD students Samruddha Kokare and Inês Ferreira were present to support these activities.
This 2022 edition of the European Researchers' Night was, in all likelihood, a success. In addition to our booth being visited by countless young people who were very excited about our Sustainable Logistics game, parents, teachers and researchers, we also had a visit from a company CEO and the Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education, Professor Elvira Fortunato, who showed great interest in learning more about the S-WAAM project.
