From July 14 to 18, 2025, Professor João Fradinho, from DEMI and a member of UNIDEMI, represented NOVA FCT at the 4th IAAD International Summer School on Axiomatic Design, in Bolzano, Italy.
The event, part of the European project SUSEE – Smaller Universities for Sustainability in Engineering Education, brought together faculty and students from universities in Italy, the USA, Iceland, Poland, Germany, France, Colombia, and Portugal to explore the principles of Axiomatic Design and their application to sustainable systems.
João Fradinho was one of the guest speakers and presented one of the program's lessons, dedicated to independence metrics, from a theoretical and practical perspective. The event offered a comprehensive overview of the fundamental principles of Axiomatic Theory based on over 30 years of teaching and practical experience. Aimed at both beginners and experienced users, it presented qualitative and quantitative methods for selecting good design solutions and encouraging innovation.
Local companies were involved and presented case studies for developing projects incorporating sustainability aspects. An initiative that reinforced international collaboration and the role of Engineering in sustainable innovation.
