Professor Duarte Dinis presents a seminar at the University of Bergamo on uncertainty management in aircraft maintenance

11-07-2025

On July 9th, Professor Duarte Dinis held a seminar at the University of Bergamo, Italy, entitled "From Known/Knowns to Black Swans: How to Effectively Manage Uncertainty in Aviation Maintenance Capacity Planning."

The seminar addressed one of the biggest challenges faced by Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) organizations in the aviation sector: capacity planning. This process involves estimating future workload, determining the available workforce, and balancing the two. The seminar presented the various types of uncertainty that make this task complex, as well as possible approaches for managing these uncertainties effectively—from predictable risks to so-called black swans.

We thank Professors Roberto Sala and Fabiana Pirola for the invitation and hospitality, which greatly contributed to the success of this academic meeting.

The University of Bergamo therefore continues to establish itself as a space for reflection and debate on central themes for the aeronautical industry and for operations management in contexts of high uncertainty.
